How to Choose the Best ONT for Village Springs-Net Fiber Optic Internet
Thank You for choosing to connect to Springs-Net! Springs-Net utilizes a Passive Optical Network (PON) as the last part of the Internet that reaches your home or business. To join Springs-Net will involve installing a fiber optic cable to an accessible location outside of your building. This involves running a fiber cable to that outside junction box and then installing another fiber cable to an “ONT” located inside your building. Typically this is located where other utilities enter your building. It is important to locate the ONT near an electrical receptacle as well as considering placement for the best WiFi experience.
ONT stands for Optical Network Terminal. The ONT is a path to the Internet for fiber technology just like a cable modem is the outlet for a coaxial cable Internet connection. It is a device that communicates directly with an Internet service provider (ISP) to get a fiber-optic Internet connection in your home or business and direct it to an Ethernet connection or Wi-Fi or both. The ONTs that the village will be utilizing should look like one of the pictures below:
If you have an existing router, either wireless or wired, you should check to see that it will handle the data speed of your new fiber connection.(300 Mbps or 1 Gbps.) You should make sure that your existing wireless router utilizes Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) otherwise you will not get the speed you might expect. Springs-Net is offering two DZS ONT models for your selection.

- The DZS 2428B1 model (Figure 1) has built in Wi-Fi 5, 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a SC/APC fiber optic connection. This model is best if you do NOT have existing WiFi or you would like to replace your existing WiFi router.
- The DZS 2424A1 model (Figure 2) provides 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a SC/APC fiber optic connection. You should choose this model if you have an existing WiFi router or Access Point that is relatively new.

Configure SSID & PassPhrase on the WiFi enabled DZS GPON-2428B1 ONT
The first thing that needs to be done is to find the default values printed on the upper left rear of the ONT. (Note: If these work for you, then you can use them “as is” in your computer, smart phone or tablet.)
To change the SSID/PassPhrase.
Power on the ONT if not already on. (Push button on back of unit) Connect an Ethernet cable (preferred) to one of the four (GE1-4) YELLOW ports on the rear. If connecting wirelessly, take note of the two default SSID names (Zhone_4001 and Zhone5G_4001) that should appear in your computer’s or phone’s WiFi configuration and key the appropriate PassPhrase into your computer’s WiFi configuration.
In a web browser, Go To http://192.168.100.2 or http://192.168.100.4
You should see a login box popup. Key in the indicated Username & Password.
Username: user
Password: VOYS!olt
(Note: In certain situations, the IP number might have been changed, if you are unable to get the login popup, consult tech. support)
You will be presented with the following screen.
Select the “Configuration” box and then select “wireless basic”. Here is where you may change the SSID from Zhone_4001 to whatever you wish for the wl0 (2.4 GHz) network. Note that you can “hide” the Access Point. You also can enable and rename “Guest” Access Point SSID’s and the recommendation is to pick isolate for guests.
Next, select the security tab. Here is where you can select any of the SSID’s you created above and select a passphrase that works for you. The default values of the other selections should be OK.
Don’t forget to click Apply/Save and keep in mind that if you are connected wirelessly to the ONT, you will be disconnected from the router until you key in the newly entered values for SSID/PassPhrase. You should then repeat this process for wl1 (5 Ghz) wireless network.
